Tatting a Ring
THIS IS THE WAY I TAT - NOT EVERYONE TATS THE
SAME WAY - DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!
Fill the shuttle and hold the thread between the thumb and index finger of the left hand with the end hanging down. Wrap the thread around the open fingers of the left hand making a circle by catching the thread again between the thumb and forefinger.

This circle will form a ring when closed. Hold the shuttle between the thumb and index finger of the right hand with the front pointing forward away from you. The first half of the doublestitch is done as follows: Keep the thread coming from the shuttle above the left hand. Use the middle finger of the right hand to keep the shuttle thread taut. Insert the shuttle into the front of the circle of thread letting the top of the circle slide along the top of the shuttle between the shuttle and your forefinger (the shuttle thread will be above your forefinger) until it slips off the back of the shuttle.

Next, slide the circle thread forward again under the shuttle between the shuttle and your thumb pulling the shuttle out of the circle. Hold the thread firmly between the forefinger and thumb of the left hand pulling the shuttle thread tight with the right hand while simultaneously extending the middle finger of the left hand upward lifting the top of the circle up.

If done correctly the stitch will flip over to the circle. (You might hear a slight pop.) The second half of the double stitch is done as follows: Keeping the circle around your left hand, let the thread from the shuttle hang loose. Insert the back of the shuttle into the back of the circle letting the top of the circle slide forward along the top of the shuttle between it and your forefinger until it slips off the front.

Hold the thread firmly between the forefinger and thumb of the left hand pulling the shuttle thread tight with the right hand while simultaneously extending the middle finger of the left hand upward lifting the top of the circle up. If done correctly the stitch will flip over to the circle. (You might hear a slight pop again.) Use the middle finger of the left hand to slide the second half of the stitch up snugly against the first half. Double stitch completed.

Continue until desired size is reached and close ring by pulling the shuttle thread until the circle is closed. If the ring won't close, one or more of the stitches didn't flip.
